Prime Minister Andy Burnham has urged football fans and the public to study the independent commission’s report before drawing conclusions over Manchester City’s (Man City) reported verdict in the Premier League’s long-running financial case.
Burnham, speaking to ITV Granada, said the dispute between City and the Premier League had been a “quite a contested process” and should not be reduced to simple conclusions.
“I would have to look at the report of the independent commission, and people shouldn’t jump to those kinds of conclusions,” Burnham said.
“I know this has been a long process between the club and the Premier League. I think it has been quite a contested process.
“So I don’t think it’s as simple as jumping to conclusions. I think we would all need to study the independent commission’s report in some considerable detail before reaching any conclusions.”
Manchester City reported guilty of 114 charges
Manchester City have reportedly been found guilty of 114 of the 115 Premier League financial-rule charges against them, according to The Athletic, in a development that has intensified scrutiny of the club’s finances and its trophy-laden era.
However, sanctions have not yet been determined, while City are expected to appeal. The club has also said the Premier League process remains ongoing and subject to confidentiality.
The charges were brought in February 2023 following a four-year Premier League investigation into alleged breaches covering the period from 2009 to 2018.
The allegations include failing to provide accurate financial information, issues relating to payments to players and coaches, breaches of financial sustainability rules and failing to cooperate with the Premier League’s investigation.
City face potential sporting consequences
The reported findings could have significant consequences if they are upheld following the appeal process.
Possible sanctions reported in connection with the case include a points deduction and, in the most serious scenario, expulsion from the Premier League. The timing and nature of any punishment, however, remain undecided.
The case has also raised questions about City’s historic success under the ownership of Sheikh Mansour’s Abu Dhabi United Group, which acquired the club in 2008.
City have won eight Premier League titles, four FA Cups, seven League Cups and one Champions League during the period of their rise to dominance in English football.
The allegations became a major public issue after documents published by German outlet Der Spiegel in 2018 appeared to raise questions about sponsorship revenue and payments involving senior club figures.
City have consistently denied wrongdoing.
Burnham’s intervention comes as attention turns to the independent commission’s full report and the next stage of the legal process.
